Well, actually J.J. Thomson discovered (with a very smart experiment) the value of the ratio between charge and mass of the electron. He devised a model of the atom that took into account the presence of positive and negative charges.
The model was called the "Plum-Pudding Model".
In this model you have a positive uniform spherical dough with negative plums inserted in it:
This model was then challenged by Rutherford and by the results of his famous "Gold-Foil" experiment.

JJ Thomson was a English physicist who discovered an model called the plum pudding model. He referred an atom to a Christmas pudding. he said that the pudding was completely positive and the spread raisins on the pudding was negative ( know today as electrons)
this was later abandoned after the discovery of atomic nucleus
