Why do so many people contribute on Socratic?

I find that most of the questions asked on this site are more thoughtful and interesting. There is room to add proper math, graphs, etc.

It seems that the average age and education is higher than other sites I work on.

I contribute to help others gain knowledge in that particular area. Plus as it is said, knowledge increases only if we share it :) It never harmed anyone to help others learn.

First of all, I'm happy to be part of this community where everyone is passionate about science, education, science popularization, sharing knowledge in general. Also, it is very nice and fun to help other people when they don't know something or when they want to learn more about it.

It makes me smile every time I see... Deevona has helped students in 147 countries.

Knowledge is a treasure.

Whoever has a treasure is interested in its preservation.

The only way to preserve the knowledge is to share it with those who seek it. Not only this preserves the knowledge in the mind of a teacher, but it multiplies it because more people would possess it.

By sharing our knowledge with live people, with books and with Web sites we achieve certain spiritual immortality - the Holy Grail of humanity.

I participate on Socratic.org because I love teaching. Unfortunately, I had to retire on disability in 2003, but I really missed the teaching. I like participating in Socratic because I get to teach, and it helps me to keep current. I like that the founders of Socratic look for teachers to be contributors, although many non-teachers and students make excellent contributions, too. I like the way saying "Thank you" is encouraged, and I also like that the founders of Socratic are very quick to respond. I think this new part of Socratic is a great idea, and look forward to learning about and communicating with other contributors.

I believe that we are all learners from different walks of life whether old or young. Every time I struggle to learn something new and master it, I wish to make the same experience a smoother one for another person.

Socratic is a proof of the fact that one can truly be considered a subject's master only when he/she is able to share that knowledge with someone and most importantly, make them understand.
Otherwise, the whole exercise of teaching and learning is futile.

Plus, this is a platform where students can ask as many questions as they want to without getting teachers annoyed like in a normal class (I tend to do that ;) ).

As a part of the 21st century, we have new tools like Socratic to create a web of knowledge to share, understand and evolve the intellectual quest of mankind, unlike books and libraries of the previous centuries. ( I sound like a history teacher! :-D)

This new way of teaching and learning allows us to cross geographical, cultural and social barriers and learn what we want to learn by connecting with people from all over the world, which I find extremely exciting.

If I am right in saying so, this site could be the next Facebook for learning, if it is developed further.

It makes me happy to be a part of this new education system. :)

To be honest, I contribute just because I love being able to help others. And through this QA, I am able to do that a lot. In addition, I feel that this also allows me to relearn things that I learned in the past, but this time gain a much stronger understanding.

Hello!
I love Maths, all the Maths! In Italy I was a tutor and I would like to be a teacher also here in UK where I live now.
When I discovered this site I enrolled immediatly for two reasons. The fist of all is my love for this fascinating subject, the second is to become expert in the "Maths English" (and in English...).
I hope I can meet here many interesting people of all the world!

I contribute to Socratic because I think it's a great way to help students beyond the walls of my physical classroom.

I remember learning science (actually still learning!) in high school/college and sometimes being frustrated that I had very few people to actually discuss topics with and ask questions other than my teachers and classmates. Showing my age here ;-)

Now, students and teachers from around the world can get together to help make learning less frustrating. Now learning can be more fun, rewarding and social. I am glad to share what I can and I've learned a lot along the way from so many other great contributors.

Cheers!

Hi there!

I contribute on Socratic because, as simple as it sounds, I like to help people. I'm a student myself, so I definitely still have a lot to learn-but it will make me happy if I can help someone out in the process.

The older I get, the more I realize that I am passionate about the value of all sorts of knowledge. I believe that with guidance, determined initiative, and perpetual effort, anyone can unlock their potential. Socratic is a medium to help people do that, especially with the changing nature of education. It shows that there are so many people who want to learn, but it also shows that there are as many people who are willing to teach :)

Having taken online courses at one point, I realized that the amount of educational content on the internet is incredible- I genuinely appreciate the input that online teachers give. I'd like to send a big thank you to all the other contributors !

I just love this place. As a student i am crazy about science and maths.Joining Socratic, teaching maths and science here not only allows me to share what i have but also allows me to gain more by the questions asked by the students and my mistakes corrected by the community members or by the moderators. On Socratic every student can answer like a teacher even though he/she is not graduated as a teacher. Not only that, we can ask our difficulties with millions of awesome teachers around the world. Seriously, this place is made for everyone ie. from an engineer to a seventh grade student At the end I just want to say:-

I have a burning desire to help others learn.

If I know the answer or how to get the answer, I am happy to help, and the process of answering helps me clarify my own thought processes.

Even more interesting are the questions to which I don't know the answers.

I research the topic to satisfy my own curiosity.

If the questioners don't know the answers, I am only too happy to be of assistance.

Finally, I am retired, so I have the time and, I hope, the process helps stave off mental degeneration.

Well, I believe that when someone or something help you, you should give back.

Any doubt? This is what I do...

1) Log onto my laptop
2) Click the Socratic button on my favourites
3) Ask the question
4) While I wait for the answer, I look for unanswered questions which I think I am able to help

Anyway, when I answer a question, I feel very happy.
Especially, when someone says Thank You!

So keep asking and Contributing! :)

I will simply just quote what a fellow socratic, Kate M., said on the New Socratic Members topic.

"I'm a huge believer that scientists have a duty to educate the next generation"

Some thoughts below:

Explanation:

I can't speak for anyone else who contributes, but I can certainly chime in on my contributing experience.

First off, I'm retired. Gone are the days of toiling away for the better part of a day engaged in either making money (i.e. working) or formal learning (i.e. school). My days are mine to do with as I please. It pleases me to have been a part of Socratic and to continue to do so.

There are a few reasons I've started and then continued sharing answers on Socratic for the roughly #1 1/2# years I've been doing this - stave off boredom, intellectual curiosity, the challenge of answering new and diverse problems, etc. Now I do it because it's part of my morning routine - I wake up, check email, hit social and news media, and then settle in to hang out on Socratic for anywhere between a half-hour to an hour. Sometimes I don't make it here and sometimes I spend more than that, but on average that's my routine.

I look for questions that get me thinking or that simply asked to be answered, like this one did.

I think I can speak for most, if not all, contributors in saying that our involvement with Socratic is a mixture of personal pride, a desire to help others, a means to find personal satisfaction, and in the end something we enjoy doing.

I hope you continue to find Socratic useful!

Socratic is full with smart students, teachers, retired teachers and more. I am not sure how they manage their times to do that but I think they are willing to help others so they make sure to spend at least 2 hours on the site.

For me, I tried to answer at least 5 questions each day. I love doing that because I love when people are helping me too.

Honestly, I have a lot of assignments too and I consider Socratic as a "Life Saver" for me. The way they helped users with their questions is unbelievable, as you can see :) So whenever, I am not sure about my work, I just post it here to see if I was on the right track.

Listen, if you really want to help others you can do that easily. You have 24 hours, you can give the site at least 20 minutes :)

Best of luck!
