Explanation:
The ER membrane is an extension of the outer nuclear membrane. If you cut up a spherical cell in half, this is what the ER would look like.
I suppose you could say this kind of structure divides the cell into compartments.
However, everything inside the cell is held in place and moved around on the cytoskeleton, made up of fliaments and tubes. Watch this video:
