When you add together a positive number and a negative number, the positive number, the positive and the negative cancel and become a negative.

Because of this y+(−3)=7 becomes y−3=7
This can then be solved as a linear equation:
y−3=7
y−3+3=7+3
y=7+3

Therefore:
y=10
