Common to 12 and 9 is 36, which you get by multiplying by 3/3 and 4/4 respectively, resulting in $15/36$ and $32/36$ .

But you can't take $32/36$ from $15/36$ so take 1" from the man's height, change it to $36/36$ and add it to the $15/36$ to get $51/36$ .
