The Han dynasty was the first time that the Chinese used Confucianism as their main philosophy of rule. During the Qin dynasty, Shi Huangdi primarily used Legalism and its laws to govern China.
Along with Confucianism comes the civil service exams. The exams tested scholars on Confucian texts such as the Analects for a possible spot in the bureaucracy. This system was very useful because it chose qualified government people instead of simply choosing by connections and lineage.
