The formation of seed is part of the process of reproduction in angiosperms and gymnosperms.
Explanation:
Seed formation begins with the combination of a male and female gamete. This is called as syngamy ( fertilisation ) .
When the pollen grain lands on the stigma after pollination, it germinates by sending out a pollen tube. This enters the embryo sac through the micropyle and releases two pollen sperm cells.
One of these fuses with the egg cell to form a diploid ( 2 N ) zygote. The other fuses with the polar nucleus resulting in a triploid ( 3 N ) endosperm.
Seeds are the product of the ripened ovule after pollination by pollen.
