How does the name Porifera relate to the structure of a sponge?

1 Answer

Porifera is a Latin Word.

Explanation:

Porifera originates from two words called Porous = having holes and fer = bearing. Organisms that bear pores in their body are included in Porifera. Example: Sponges.

Body of sponge is diploblastic, which surrounds a 'spongocoel' and the body is perforated by innumerable incoming pores called ostia. There are one/more larger pore called osculum through which water is thrown out of spongocoel.
