Isolation
Explanation:
Chinese emperors in these times were very opposed to European influence, and thus, they tried to limit their involvement with western empires.
Emperors during China's prime dynasties (ex: Ming, Qing, etc) practiced the idea of isolation. Isolation included the following:
- Restricted Trade
- Physical Isolation (border tightening, etc)
- Promotion of closed-minded culture (to outside world)
During this time, rulers heavily limited contact with the rest of the world and prevented citizens from working as merchants or traders. As a result, European influence did not reach China and its traditions and values were protected.
There were, however, a few Europeans that managed to find their way into China. These men include Marco Polo and Lord Macartney.
