Periphrasis is when you use one word instead of another to express the same thing.
Example 1:
The birds did go south for winter.
The birds went south for winter.
Example 2:
She threw the ugly sweater on the bed.
She threw the hideous sweater on the bed.
Explanation:
Periphrasis is used to convey the same meaning with different words.
