The first two sentences have modifiers including gerunds. In a proper use of participles subjects of both parts of the sentence must be the same.
In the second sentence this condition is met. Both verbs: opening and started have the same subject - Aniko Delaney.
The second sentence has a logical mismatch: in the second part the subject is my German shepherd , but it cannot be the subject of first part (dogs usually do not read letters).
