It's just like writing a full electron configuration, but you get to use a short-cut.

Here is a quick example

To write the full electron configuration of Ne, you would write:

$1 s^{2} 2 s^{2} 2 p^{6}$ $1s^2 2s^2 2p^6$

The shorthand uses the next smallest Noble gas to replace part of the full electron configuration.

He = $1 s^{2}$ $1s^2$

So the shorthand notation for Ne is:

] [He] $2s^2 2p^6$
