To make weather predictions and to improve meteorological models.

Explanation:

Meteorology started with people taking detailed notes of weather variables, such as air temperature, quantity of precipitation, dew point, quantity and kind of clouds, and many more.

Once enough data was gathered, we started developing statistical models of bigger and bigger areas in order to make predictions from current data.

Nowadays these models reside in super computers and are incredibly sophisticated, but they are all based on the mathematical, statistical models developed throughout the years. Meteorology scientists use mathematics to generate weather predictions and to improve the models so the predictions can get better with time.
