Selena was a huge inspiration particularly to the Mexican-American community because she was a huge crossover artist in the United States and in Mexico.

Explanation:

Selena was a very influential Latina hitmaker from the 1990s due to her ability to write music that appealed to both US and Mexican audiences. She grew up in Texas and lived there for most of her life, despite touring nationally and internationally as she aged. Her album, Amor Prohibido, to this day remains one of the best-selling Spanish-language albums of all time. Her meteoric rise to music and celebrity stardom--and perhaps also her tragic murder by Yolanda Saldívar--is a large reason why she was and still remains an inspiration to the Mexican-American community.

Sidenote: There is an excellent film about Selena's life called Selena, which stars Jennifer Lopez.
