The cytoplasm is the organelle in a cell which is often not visible on your typical diagrams: This is because it holds all of the organelles in place, and if it was colored or not transparent, the rest of the organelles in the cell would be impossible to see. If it weren't present in a cell, then when the cell moved around then the nucleus would burst open, and the internals of the cell would become disorganized. The result is the cell would die quite quickly.

The cytoplasm is also the organelle which occupies the most space in a cell.
