This is a very simplified version of what happened. There is the concept of Pangea, or a supercontinent, which had all the continents we know today merged together as one at some point in history. Due to tectonic motion, land masses separated and moved which turned into what the continents look like today on a globe. Note that continents do not simply "float" away. That is a misconception. The crust of the Earth exists both undersea and above water. We call these "continents" and "land" simply because they happen to have elevations greater than sea level.
