Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) was the first one who gave women their rights by giving the concept of religion Islam.

Explanation:

Pre-Islamic Situation:
Before the advent of Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H) and Islam, women were treated badly than slaves. It would not be wrong to say that women were even not considered as humans.
The era existed before the arrival of Islam is known as 'Jahiliya period' which means period of ignorance and senselessness. The biggest victim of Jahiliya period were women.
However, the women of reputed tribes were treated respectfully but for all other, the situation was quite different.

  • The Arabs used to treat their women as worse as animals.
  • Women had no rights and also not any kinda social status.
  • If a man could afford, he married as many women as he wanted and quit on them anytime without any obvious reason.
  • On the death of a person, his brothers inherited his widows as though they were their property.
  • Women had no share in legacy.
  • The most inhumane act practiced at that time was: The fathers used to bury their new-born daughters alive without any hesitation.

So that was a brief overview of the pre-Islamic situation of women.

Post-Islamic Situation:
But the Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H) turned the tables by giving the concept of a complete religion Islam. Islam bestowed an honourable and prestigious place to women in the society.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Islam gave women a new life by giving them all their rights.

  • Allah Almighty says in Holy Quran:
"And when the female (infant) buried alive (as the pagan Arabs used to do) shall be questioned. For what sin she was killed?"
    (Al Takweer, 8-9)
  • Allah's messenger(PBUH) joined two fingers illustrating this:
"Whoever looks for two girls till they attain maturity, will come with me on the Day of Resurrection like this”.
    (Muslim)
  • The best example can be Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H) saying also known as Hadith:
    "Heaven lies at mother's feet"
    (Sunan an-Nasa'i 3104 In-book reference : Book 25, Hadith 20 English translation : Vol. 1, Book 25, Hadith 3106)
Thus, Islam has raised the status of woman from below the Earth to so high that paradise lies at her feet. It(paradise) is something that a person desires his whole life. And Islam has given the mother paradise down her feet which means giving her stupendous respect and value.
  • Holy prophet(P.B.U.H) said in another hadith:
“The person who is faced with hardship due to his daughters, and makes Sabr (is patient), then his daughters will be a Pardah (curtain) between him and the Hell-fire.”
  • Islam gave women right of legacy. Allah Almighty says in Holy Quran:
"There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by parents and those nearest related, whether, the property be small or large – a legal share".
  • In another Hadith, Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) said:
“The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives”.
(Narrated and classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi, 3895).
  • Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H) said in his Hadith:
"Women are twin halves of men".
(Narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan, 236, from the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 216).

Islam describes that a husband is an “administrator and Supervisor over the people of the house” and wife is described as an “administrator of the house of her husband and children”.
Thus, Islam has not only given rights to the women but also has given them some paramount authorities and responsibilities which can be fulfilled & handled only by them(women).
Every 'Ayat' and 'Hadith' written above are the results of some particular events that happened at that time. But considering that answer is getting pretty long, I am winding it up.
Hope that it would be enough...
