Here's why...

We set the smaller 1 to be $x$ $x$
We know the larger number is 7 less than $2 x$ $2x$ . So, it's $2 x - 7$ $2x - 7$

Let's add the numbers together to get 47...

$x + 2 x - 7 = 47$ $x + 2x - 7 = 47$
$3 x = 54$ $3x = 54$
$x = 18$ $x = 18$

We're not done!
That solves for smaller number: 18, but there is the larger number which is 7 less than $2 \cdot 18$ $2 * 18$ Which is 29.

$29 + 18 = 47$ $29 + 18 = 47$

And $18 \cdot 2 - 7 = 29$ $18 * 2 - 7 = 29$
