Bohr built on the work of Dr Rutherford who had already proposed that an atom consisted of a positively charged nucleus with negatively charged electrons surrounding it.
Bohr took this model and adapted it slightly in as much as he proposed that electrons must reside in specific orbitals or 'shells' of a given energy.
