If due to some ingury the chordae tandinae of the tricuspid valve is partially nonfunctional, then what is the immediate effect?
The flow of the blood into the pulmonary artery will be reduced or the blood tend to flow into the left atrium.

1 Answer
The flow of blood into pulmonary artery will be reduced.
Explanation:
Chordae tendineae are tough tendinous strands which basically connect papillary muscles to heart valves. Pappilary muscles are present in ventricles. In right ventricle, Chordae tendineae connect the papillary muscles to the cusps or leaflets of tricuspid valve. (these also connect papillary muscles of left ventricle to bicuspid valve). But we will focus only on tricuspid for now.
Heart has its valves which support the unidirectional flow of blood. One of these valve is tricuspid valve also called as right atrioventicular valve. It is present between the right atrium & right ventricle and prevents the blood to move back into right atrium.
As the right atrium contracts to pour down the blood into the right ventricle. Then papillary muscles alongwith chordae tendineae, contract to open the tricuspid valve and to let the blood move down into right ventricle. As the ventricle becomes filled with blood then pressure of blood there increases. At the same time, papillary muscles alongwith chordae tendineae, relax and closes the tricuspid valve. Hence tricuspid valve prevent the blood to flow back into the right atrium present above it. As the ventricle contracts, blood leaves the heart through the pulmonic valve or pulmonary semilunar valve, into the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary artery originates from the pulmonary trunk at the right ventricle and it carry the blood from right ventricle to the lungs for oxygenation.
Thus chordae tendineae work to maintain the cusps of tricuspid valve in their proper position during the flow of blood.
So now if we consider that chordae tendineae of tricuspid valve have become partially non-functional then the immediate effect would be: flow of blood in pulmonary artery would be reduced.
Hope it helps...
