Adaptation functions to help any living organism (be it plant or animal) become better adapted to survive and reproduce in it's given environment.

Explanation:

One of the best known examples of natural selection and adaptation is that of the peppered moth.

Peppered moths, as the name implies, are white and have a speckled black pattern. Paler peppered moths are more common because the tree's where they live are light in color, thus they are bettered camouflaged from predators and less likely to be eaten and more likely to survive and successfully reproduce.

BUT in the 19th century the soot and pollution from industrialization caused many tress closer to urban areas to turn darker in color. In turn the light peppered moths were spotted more easily and more likely to be eaten and not reproduce passing on their genes. As a result darker colored peppered moths now had an advantage because they camouflaged better and were more likely to survive. The population of darker colored peppered moths increased as a result. This adaptation was essential to the moths survival because if this adaptation had not been present their numbers would have dwindled.
