The simplest way to solve this is to set up an equation that includes all parts of the problem.

The best equation would look like this:

15.5 - 3.875(3) = x

15.5 being the original length of the board

3.875(3) being the length cut off times the number of times being cut off

And x being the final length

All we do from here is to solve.

15.5 - 11.625 = x

3.375 = x

Simplify and get:

x = 3 3/8 ft.
