Why did the Philippines not do well in the initial stages of World War 2 against Japan?
Explanation:
Pretty much every body did badly against the Japanese Military in the early stages of World War 2. One part was leadership and one part was equipment, part was strategic planning.
American and British high command were both problematic. In the Philippines MacArthur compromised the defense in a number of ways. First he did not disperse his aircraft as he was concerned about guerrilla activity. The concentrated aircraft were destroyed parked wing tip to wing tip on major airfields. Japanese surprise attacks destroyed the Philippine Air defenses in the first days.
Bataan was always supposed to be a last hold out but the supplies to make the defense last as long as possible were dispersed to earlier fighting. When the last defense was setup there was not enough supplies to hold out for very long. MacArthur allowed himself to get drawn into fighting in more open ground where his green troops did badly.
The Japanese had a lot of very good equipment. In particular the Zero fighter and the Long Lance torpedo. The American torpedos had problems early in the war. The US aircraft were often not up to the quality of the Japanese aircraft and pilots. The Philippine Military was not yet highly trained. Training would have been MacArthur's responsibility.
The Japanese meticulously planned their opening moves against the Allies. They setup staging areas for their Navy and Air Force. They made good use of flanking attacks and created specialize units to make amphibious landings. They were ruthless.
The Japanese made a large scale effort to gain as much territory as possible. If they were only attacking the Philippines then creating a counter attacking force would have been possible.
Because the Japanese conquered a huge area in a short period of time and the Allies decided to concentrate on Germany there was no liberating force coming in the time that the defense could hold out for. As it was Philippine resistance later on was was strong in the out lying areas and with US support did well there.
