#3/5=7/a# => cross multiply:

#3a=35# => divide both sides by 3:

#a=35/3= 11 2/3#

#a = 11.67#

From #3/5 = 7/a#, cross multiply.

#3*a = 5*7#

Multiply that out and you have #3*a = 35#

Divide both sides by 3 and cancel where available and you have

#(cancel(3)*a)/cancel(3) = 35/3#

So now you have #a = 35/3 = 11.67#.
