A certain quantity of electric charge produces 5.0g of silver from an aqueous solution of silver nitrate. When the same amount of charge is passed through an aqueous solution containing the X^n+Xn+ ions , 3.02g of X is produced.,What is the value of n?

n = 3

Explanation:

Silver is discharged:

sf(Ag^(+)+erarrAg)

This means a mole of silver is discharged by a mole of electrons.

sf(n_(Ag)=m/A_(r)=5.0/108=0.0463)

sf(n_(X)=3.02/197=0.01533)

The same amount of charge deposits these amounts.

sf(n_(Ag)/n_(X)=0.0463/0.01533=3.00)

This means that 3 x as many moles of Ag is deposited compared with X. Since silver has a charge of +1 then X must have a charge of +3

It looks like X is Gold.
