$-4x + y =2$ ---------(1)
$2x - y = -4$ ----------(2)

Multiply equation (1) by $1$ and equation (2) by $2$

$-4x + y = 2$ ------------(3)
$4x - 2y = -8$ ------------(4)

Add equation (1) to equation (2)

$0 - y = -6$

Divide through by $-1$

$y = 6$ (answer)

Substitute the value of y into equation (1)

$-4x + y = 2$

$-4x + 6 = 2$

Collect like terms

$-4x = 2-6$

$-4x = -4$

Divide through by $-4$

$x = 1$ (answer)
