we see that $1 1/4$ gallons will do $5/7$ of the job so obviously more paint is needed. $1 1/4$ of what is equal to $5/7$ ?

convert to decimal for ease

$1.25/x = 5/7$

cross multiply to eliminate the denominators

$7(1.25) = 5x$

$5x = 8.75$

$x = 1.75$ (or $1 3/4$ )
