Michelle Jean was a refugee. Her Father, Roger Jean was a political refugee from Haiti.

Explanation:

Because Roger Jean could prove that he was in danger if he returned to Haiti he could apply for Refugee status in Canada. Granting this status was one thing the Canadian Government did. Granting permission for his family to join him would be another. They were granted Asylum under Canadian Law.

They would be allowed to become Canadian Citizens. Other former citizens of Haiti were allowed the same. Even though Michelle's parent's marriage broke down they were allowed to stay in Canada. Michelle and her mother and sister lived simply in Quebec. Her mother worked to support them.
