Binomial nomenclature is the system of naming the plant giving two names as explained below.
Explanation:
It is a system of giving scientific names to the plants and animals.
According to binomial nomenclature a plant or an animal is given 2 names, generic and specific name. Each genus includes a number of species. Thus many plants will have have common generic name but different specific names.
Let us take the example:
Genus Petunia includes a number of species, e.g.
Petunia alba , Petunia hybrida and so on .
Genus Solanum has many species, e.g.
Solanum nigrum, Solanum melongena . These are different plants known by different vernacular or common names. Solanum nigrum (vern. mako), Solanum melongena (Vern. brinjal).
The scientific names are always written in italics.
