In 1959, dictator Battista who was pro-US was overthrown by Castro who quickly allied with the Soviet Union. The latter wanted to implement missile bases in Cuba which could have hit Florida very easily. Kennedy threatened to start a nuclear war and they finally found an agreement with the US removing its missile bases in Turkey which was a member of NATO.
