During WW 2, the British in the west and the Soviet Union in the east were Germany's major opponents. The Soviet Union was suffering under the German onslaught, and England wasn't in a position to help them.
After the United States entered the war, the British and American forces began to fight back, taking North Africa and Italy back from the Nazi invaders. The Soviet Union kept pressuring the western allies to open a second battlefront in Europe to take pressure off the Russians. Finally in 1944, Britain and America felt ready to do so, and the invasion of France happened on June 6, 1944.
"D-Day" is a military term which means the day that something is going to happen. A similar term is "H-Hour", which means the time that something is going to happen.
