In 1944-45 the Philippines were liberated from the Japanese occupation by the invasion of US troops, with active assistance by Filipinos themselves, Australia, and a contribution from Mexico.

Explanation:

In October, 1944, the US 3rd and 7th Fleets (with Task Force 74 having components from the Royal Australian Navy) landed troops from the 6th US Army on Leyte. Filipino Guerillas also played significant roles in facilitating the landings. Besides US naval aircraft, elements of the 5th US Army Air Force were also involved.

Incidentally, the landings also triggered a Japanese naval response, resulting in the largest sea-battle in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf -- a significant defeat for the Imperial Japanese Navy.

In December, 6th US Army and Filipino guerrilas also started the liberation of Mindoro. A month later, the same combination landed on Luzon.

8th US Army -- in concert with guerrillas -- landed on Palaween in February 1945 and on Mindanao in April. 201st Squadron of the Mexican Air Force arrived in June 1945 and stuck some blows to assist in the liberation of the Philippines.
