Soon after the assassination a commission was established by then-President Lyndon Johnson to examine the circumstances surrounding President Kennedy's death.

Known unofficially as the Warren Commission because it was headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the commission spent many months investigating the matter. In September of 1964 they released an 889-page report which, among other findings, determined that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in assassinating President Kennedy.

There have been many challenges to this conclusion over the intervening years, but no one has ever been able to definitively show it to be wrong; until it is conclusively refuted, the official finding still stands.
