The main use of DNA fingerprinting I would say is for crime scenes. In case a crime was committed and there was more than one suspect involved, the police can use DNA fingerprinting to find out which suspect's DNA matches the fingerprints involved in the crime.

Another use might be to protect somebody, like a mother protecting a child, in case of kidnappings or such...
