Concerning the rhythm, it is not immediately apparent from the written form of a word how many syllables it has.
For example:

"strengthened" has two syllables.

"banana" has three syllables.
Concerning the rhyme, words with quite different spelling may have similar sounding endings (at least in a some dialects):
For example:

"terror" and "thorough"

"cough" and "ruff"

"close" and "rows"
