The standard electron configuration for magnesium would be 1s22s22p63s2

The noble gas one row above magnesium is neon. Neon would have an electron configuration of 1s22s22p6.

Therefore, 1s22s22p6 can be replaced by the noble gas [Ne].
This makes the noble gas configuration of magnesium
[Ne] 3s2
