Synthesis and Decomposition are inverse reactions.

To synthesize means to bring together to build.
To decompose means to break apart to destruct.

An example of a synthesis reaction would be the formation of ammonia.

This takes place in a basic reaction of

$A + B \to A B$ $A + B -> AB$

$N_{2} + 3 H_{2} \to 2 N H_{3}$ $N_2 + 3H_2 -> 2NH_3$

An example of decomposition would be the breakdown of potassium
chlorate.

This takes place in a basic reaction of

$A B \to A + B$ $AB -> A + B$

$2 K C l O_{3} \to 2 K C l + 3 O_{2}$ $2KClO_3 -> 2KCl + 3O_2$
