The theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be obtained if all the reactants react completely according to the equation.

Here is an example:

What is the theoretical yield of magnesium oxide if 1.2g of magnesium is burned in excess oxygen?

#2Mg_((s))+O_(2(g))rarr2MgO_((s))#

#2molMgrarr2molMgO#

#A_rMg=24# #A_rO=16#

#2xx24=48grarr2(24+16)=80g#

So 1g Mg #rarr(80)/(48)g= 1.66g# #MgO#

So 1.2g Mg#rarr1.66xx1.2=2.0g# #MgO#

That is the theoretical yield.
