It is a little difficult to guess what this question is seeking. Please comment or ask another question if this answer does not help.
The term "external circuit" in discussions of generators generally refers to the path the electricity takes outside the generator. If nothing is connected in a complete circuit, no power can be transferred.
A generator may have wires and switching mechanisms inside which form circuits which create magnetic fields or transfer current moving in different directions. These could be called "internal circuits."
This question seems to be hung up on defining the term "external circuit." Authors who describe generators with this term probably don't intend it to mean very much. The external circuit is whatever you are connecting to the generator. It could be a single light bulb or an entire house. Or in the case of a large electrical generating station, it could be the entire tri-state area.
