The symbol Pb is used for the element lead.
This might seem odd, but the Latin name for lead was plumbum .
Lead was used in the past for plumbing (its use for plumbing has stopped due to the fact that it is a neurotoxin).
The term plumbing was actually derived from the Latin plumbum just as the symbol for lead was because lead was so commonly used for plumbing purposes in the past.
