Sodium will react with the water:

$N a_{(s)} + H_{2} O_{(l)} \to N a O H_{(a q)} + \frac{1}{2} H_{2 (g)}$ $Na_((s))+H_2O_((l))rarrNaOH_((aq))+1/2H_(2(g))$

A small piece of sodium will melt but a large piece may burst into flames.
