To say that a field is quantized is to say that it exchanges energy with the rest of the world through a particle, and that particle's energy is a multiple of a characteristic scale. Example: The energy levels in an atom. The electron around the nucleus can only occupy orbits whose radius is a multiple of the Bohr radius.
