The populists based their contestation on the denunciation of corporations and of the gold standard. The gold standard was made the very basis of the banking industry with the 1900 Gold Standard Act. It gave bankers a major power since only bankers could afford to own gold.
Unions managed to gain rights after WWII notably, something the Populist movement was unable to achieve. WWI enabled the government to contain the power of the unions such as the IWW.
