At times limited.

Explanation:

De Gaulle had little involvement in the Cold War immediately after 1945 as he went into retirement. It was only after his return to power with the collapse of the Fourth Republic that he had an active role.

Although a member of NATO and an original member of the EU, then the EEC, de Gaulle continually emphasised the independence of France within the Western alliance, removing NATO headquarters from Paris and withdrawing French forces from the military side of NATO. He also developed the French independent nuclear deterrence force de frappe, emphasising its independent nature.

De Gaulle felt he had been cut out of the post war negotiations and he distrusted the Americans and the British whom he saw as a poodle of the USA.
