The 1887 Dawes Act imposed a new system of land managing in which the traditonal tribal ownership of land could no longer be used. Momaday accused it of being uprooting for Native Americans and to destroy their traditions. It was justified as a means to assimilate Indians.
The Dawes Act of 1887 offered American Indians 160 acres of land to each family, and 80 acres to unmarried Indian adults who were willing to leave their tribal reservations
