In the example of a lake, the water is the abiotic element whereas the fish are the biotic. Obviously you can imagine how badly the fish are dependent on the abiotic water of the lake; without it they would die.
In the example of say a forest, the biotic plants and trees are dependent on the energy of the sun in order to perform photosynthesis and basically continue on to live.
