One thing worth noting though: the IVT does apply for irrational numbers, as long as they are contained in a larger, continuous set. To apply the IVT, you need to have a function that is continuous on an interval. The set of real numbers (or a section of it like [1,3]) is often used. This contains the set of irrational numbers.

If we just used rational numbers, we would have gaps in our function (at #sqrt2, pi, ...#) which would mean that our function is discontinuous at those points and thus we cannot use the IVT on an interval containing those points. Same thing if we only used the set of irrational numbers.
