A nucleotide in DNA consists of a base either A,C,G,T that is bonded to a deoxyribose sugar molecule and a phosphate that is attached to the sugar molecule by a phosphodiester bond. These nucleotides join together and one strand is 5'-3' and the other 3'-5'; they follow the complementary base pairings which are AT and CG. This allows the DNA to coil into that double helix shape.
