Artificial selection is a result of whim of man , thus we may prefer to choose a characteristic which would have never been selected by nature.

Thus artificial selection may not produce an organism suitable to survive better in environment . For example a small breed of chihuahua dogs are generally born by C section because natural birth is very stressful in them. Likewise man has selected an unusual mutation in corn which prevents the seeds from dispersal, thus helping us to harvest the crop without losing grains.

Man started to artificially select plants and animals of human interest only recently (less than 10 thousand years ago) but natural selection is operational for more than 3 billion years.

Artificial selection produces a large number of varieties within a very short time.
