The concept of optical drives was invented by James T. Russell who showed it to a number of companies. Phillips and Sony created and marketed the Compact Disk format.
Explanation:
This would make CDs invented by pretty nameless engineers working for the Sony and Phillips organizations. The integration of various technologies into a final product would make it difficult to assign a single name as the inventor. The financial benefits would mostly go to the Corporations with some going to Russell. The Corporations would of course be pretty happy with their Engineering Teams.
Russell never solved numerous problems associated with the idea and certainly nothing about the commercial viability of a particular format like a Disk.
